Painting the world in rainbow, one little shirt at a time.
This is where my love of creating, color, and connecting with lovely people (oh - and rainbows (and the Beatles)) - all come together in a crazy beautiful way.
My husband and I work for a Christian non-profit in teaching, counseling, and international training. I got a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling, intending to use it in ministry, and that was going to be our main gig. But as it turns out, raising & loving three little kids (and not getting much sleep) completely uses up the part of my brain that I need to be a counselor., So, I spent a couple of years just focused on my kiddos.
During my time as a stay at home mommy, I learned how to make stencils out of freezer paper, painstakingly cutting them out with an exacto knife, ironing them on, painting, and voila! Awesome, personalized shirts! I was especially fond of those itsy bitsy onesies, and I made a lot of them for friends and family. Though I'd shopped on Etsy forever, I honestly never dreamed of selling the shirts I made, because my heart in it was always gift-giving, not selling.
Eventually, I got an electronic cutting machine that allowed me to design on my computer and cut stencils MUCH more quickly. I had SO much fun making all kinds of gear for myself & my friends. Still, though, the thought of selling what I made was totally intimidating and out of reach. Finally, though, my cousin talked me into starting a business, and conveniently, she was also a graphic designer willing to make me some truly amazing branding. It sounded like fun, and I was totally okay with it being a flop. I thought it would be a fun thing to do on the side, during nap times and on the weekends. So I jumped in.
And thus, Plucky Mustard was born. What began as a hobby quickly became a full-time job, and my passion for it has grown just as much. I have to drag myself away from my work at the end of the day, and I'm so blessed to be able to say that.
